cell types, one that innervates the song motor nucleus RA, and the other that innervates the basal ganglia homologue area X. Area X, the thalamic nucleus DLM and the anterior telencephalic nucleus LMAN form the anterior forebrain pathway (AFP; gray), which is implicated in auditory feedback and song perception, and which is essential to audition-guided vocal plasticity in juvenile and adult birds. The HVC microcircuit: the synaptic basis for interactions between song motor and vocal plasticity pathways.

Synaptic interactions between telencephalic neurons innervating descending motor or basal ganglia pathways are essential in the learning, planning, and execution of complex movements. Synaptic interactions within the songbird telencephalic nucleus HVC are implicated in motor and auditory activity associated with learned vocalizations. HVC contains projection neurons (PNs) (HVC(RA)) that innerva...

Local inhibition modulates learning-dependent song encoding in the songbird auditory cortex.

Changes in inhibition during development are well documented, but the role of inhibition in adult learning-related plasticity is not understood. In songbirds, vocal recognition learning alters the neural representation of songs across the auditory forebrain, including the caudomedial nidopallium (NCM), a region analogous to mammalian secondary auditory cortices. Here, we block local inhibition ...

Synaptic interactions underlying song-selectivity in the avian nucleus HVC revealed by dual intracellular recordings.

Stimulus-dependent synaptic interactions underlying selective sensory representations in neural circuits specialized for sensory processing and sensorimotor integration remain poorly understood. The songbird telencephalic nucleus HVC is a sensorimotor area essential to learned vocal control with one projection neuron (PN) type (HVC(RA)) innervating a song premotor pathway, another PN (HVC(X)) i...

Inhibitory and Excitatory Mechanisms Underlying Auditory Responses to Learned Vocalizations in the Songbird Nucleus HVC

Speech and birdsong require auditory feedback for their development and maintenance, necessitating precise auditory encoding of vocal sounds. In songbirds, the telencephalic song premotor nucleus HVC contains neurons that respond highly selectively to the bird's own song (BOS), a property distinguishing HVC from its auditory afferents. We examined the contribution of inhibitory and excitatory s...

Neural circuits. Inhibition protects acquired song segments during vocal learning in zebra finches.

Vocal imitation involves incorporating instructive auditory information into relevant motor circuits through processes that are poorly understood. In zebra finches, we found that exposure to a tutor's song drives spiking activity within premotor neurons in the juvenile, whereas inhibition suppresses such responses upon learning in adulthood. We measured inhibitory currents evoked by the tutor s...
